“The Good Life is the Catholic Life.”

The Catholic Church is like a thick steak, a glass of red wine, and a good cigar.
G.K. Chesterton
In Catholicism, the pint, the pipe and the Cross can all fit together.
GK Chesterton
From man’s sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world.
Saint Arnold of Metz, The Patron Saint of Brewers
Wherever the Catholic sun doth shine,
There’s always laughter and good red wine.
At least I’ve always found it so.
Benedicamus Domino!
Hilaire Belloc
Sorrow can be alleviated by good sleep, a bath, and a glass of good wine.
St. Thomas Aquinas
I would like a great lake of beer for the King of Kings.
St. Brigid of Ireland
Listers, have we missed any? Feel free to add them in the combox and if there is enough we may make another list. SPL has also published lists of prayers for blessing beer, prayers for blessing wine, pictures of our dear “Papa Ratzi” enjoying a fine ale and our classic list of the 7 Authentic Trappist Ales.
Cheers.

Is that really what you love about being Catholic: Cigars and Beer?
I realize we’re not Puritans, but a small dose of caution seems to be in order before vices are extolled as virtues.

Philip recall the wedding feast at Cana, the wedding feast ran out of wine. The Blessed Mother, who was without sin, implored her Son to fix the situation. The Lord complied. Recall also the Last Supper, the first Mass. There’s nothing wrong with enjoying good wine or beer and a fine cigar.

Philip: Relax, put your feet up, and have Trappist beer. Is wine or beer a vice? Only if used that way. Water can be a vice, as can food, as can sex – but only if used that way. Otherwise they are all gifts from God to be used for the good.

Alcohol is a potent drug. Tobacco is a carcinogen. Alcohol should be used with caution. Tobacco should not be used at all. Fire is also a gift from God, but you have to be very careful when using it or you will get burned.

Philip: In the essentials, unity. In the nonessentials, liberty. In all things, charity.
I, for one, see the beauty and humanity in the celebration of Catholic culture in good wine and beer, and in the pipe, in jovial communion, in Catholic communion. I find within Catholicism the best of Western Civilization preserved and purified. Abuse of alcohol is horrid, and extreme excess smoking is damaging to the temple of God, the body. Neither of these things are necessarily vices depending on the person and the amount indulged, since vices are actions that are objectively sinful always for everyone. I think it’s pretty hard to argue that wine, beer, and, say, smoking a pipe are objectively sinful like that.

I suppose you still use it, don’t you?

Now I am going to *have* to buy some steak and a robust bottle of Cabernet for dinner, so I can fully experience the comparison. JK.

How about a quote from the great Tolkien himself? “If more of us valued food and cheer above hoarded gold, it would be a much merrier world.” (Thorin, from The Hobbit).
God bless!
