Pope Benedict XVI and Incense: 15 Noble Photos

“And another angel came and stood before the altar, having a golden censer: and there was given to him much incense, that he should offer of the prayers of all saints, upon the golden altar which is before the throne of God.”

Listers, incense has been used in worship to the One-True-God for thousands of years. It was used in the Old Testament, used to honor Our Lord at both his birth and death, was seen in the worship of heaven by St. John, and continues as a hallmark of proper Catholic worship.1

“I have cried to Thee, O Lord, hear me: hearken to my voice, when I cry to Thee. Let my prayer be directed as incense in Thy sight; the lifting up of my hands, as evening sacrifice.”
Psalm 140:1-2

Very cool… I wish incense was used more often in regular Masses. It’s one of the things that I think brings more sacredness to the liturgy. We only see it once or twice a year in our parish but if we had incence every Sunday I think it would be a great addition to our liturgy.

I love the idea— a suggestion though: each picture would be appreciated much better if we could see them individually in a slide show! And I agree with Steve. I’ve grown to appreciate incense more and more. To me it represents the ultimate sensory tool. It snaps me out of my modernism and reminds me that “hey, you’re not an intellectual robot. Aim ALL of yourself to this devotion.”

    • Miss Kara,

Regarding the slideshow, if you click on the individual photograph, it should bring that photo up, darken the background, and allow you to cycle through the photographs in a slideshow manner. Cheers.
